Summit Diner in downtown Summit, NJ, keeps the classic diner tradition alive with a cozy, no-frills atmosphere that feels like a step back to a 1950s-style eatery. It's the kind of spot where locals come to savor hearty, straightforward breakfasts and lunches without the fuss—think generous plates of corned beef hash and eggs, a Mexican omelette loaded with flavor, or fluffy buttermilk pancakes paired with crispy bacon.

The interior dining space has that familiar diner vibe with a slightly vintage touch, and while the place can get busy during peak hours—especially around midday on weekdays—it feels lively and approachable rather than rushed. Outdoor seating is available and works well on pleasant days, offering views of Union Place’s quiet, tree-lined stretch. It’s a neat option for those wanting a bit of fresh air or bringing along a four-legged friend, as the atmosphere here feels welcoming rather than formal.

Service tends to be brisk and attentive, supporting the practical, everyday nature of this classic diner experience. While the menu is straightforward, it covers breakfast and lunch essentials thoroughly, making it easy for regulars and newcomers alike to find something to satisfy morning or midday cravings—whether that’s a double bacon egg and cheese sandwich or a hot roast beef sandwich for lunch.

Visitors looking for a casual, unpretentious spot to start the day or grab a filling lunch will appreciate Summit Diner’s steady service and solid comfort food. Those who prefer a quieter meal might aim for off-peak times, as the diner can get bustling, especially during weekend mornings and lunch rushes. The space doesn’t shy away from its diner roots, so expect a friendly, straightforward setting more than polished modern décor or curated ambiance.

In summary, Summit Diner works best as a neighborhood staple for classic American diner fare in Summit’s downtown. It suits anyone wanting a familiar, relaxed place to enjoy breakfast or lunch with no surprises, alongside friendly staff and a casual vibe that fits neatly into the rhythm of the town’s daily life.

The food was really good, and the place has a nice and cozy atmosphere. The waiting time was also great — very fast service. However, I did see a rat inside the restaurant, which was a bit disappointing. The cleanliness definitely needs some improvement. Other than that, the food and service were great.

Nice old feeling like a 50's classic diner. Had breakfast and it was okay. Staff is welcoming and place is cozy.

I'm a huge Jersey diner fan and I heard about this place through a video on Business Insider. I've been meaning to go to a diner with the classic train car style and this place delivers. I went around lunchtime on a Monday and this place is packed. If you want a quiet meal, I recommend off peak hours. They do got outdoor seating but it feels more of a complete experience to eat inside. I got a simple coffee with biscuits and gravy and the whole place is no frills - just a sit down and enjoy your time vibe. It's cash only but honestly, for a place like this, it works out pretty well. Prices are fair, service is quick, meals are what you expect, what more do you want? The only caveat to the place is the parking situation. I'm no Summit native so when I tried to find parking, I found the 1.5 hour parking spots quite limiting especially as someone who wanted to walk around and explore this town. There are spots for 5 hour parking a little away but it'll be a walk to get to the diner. The parking garage requiring reservations for non residents I also found the most bizarre system I've seen for parking in NJ.

We had a lovely breakfast at Summit Diner in Union, NJ! The outdoor seating was perfect, great weather, a charming downtown setting, and we were even able to bring our dog, which made it feel even more welcoming and relaxed. We ordered the Mexican omelette, spinach and feta omelette, French toast with bacon, pancakes and sausage, and coffee. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The ambiance is cozy and classic, just what you’d hope for from a diner experience. That said, there was only one server managing the outdoor tables, which understandably led to longer wait times. She was warm, friendly, and doing her best, but clearly overwhelmed, especially with a line of guests waiting to be seated. Having an extra server would have really improved the flow and made the experience smoother. Overall, it’s definitely worth a visit, especially with family or out-of-town guests, but try to go when you’re not in a rush. We’ll be back!

Food was really good. Simple menu and easy to choose. Home fries were my favorite, and even the toast was excellent. The server was very attentive and all the staff we interacted with was kind and patient. Loved this place and will be coming back

Classic diner food. Huge portions served up in a traditional diner car setting. Family owned business where they cook the food right in front of you on a griddle. This place has delicious food and old school charm. Has a lunch special for 12.75 that include a sandwich, including a gyro and a few other selections, that includes soup, fries, coleslaw, and the sandwich. Enough for two meals for me. My husband grew up in this area and this is one of his favorite local breakfast places. He had bacon, eggs over easy and home fries. They kept the bacon coming. I estimated they fed him a pound of bacon (don't judge). Can't wait to return for breakfast or lunch.
